Automated Versus Motorized Blinds and Shades

Motorized and automated window treatments are upgrade options for most custom window coverings on the market today.   There are differences when we refer to a automated versus motorized blinds and shades. As indicated by name a motorized shade is controlled by a remote.  If you automate your motorized blinds and shades with smart technology, you can program the shade to be controlled by your phone, iPad and any smart speaker that you may have in your home.

Motorized Blinds and Shades

Motorized Shade

Motorized blinds and shades are available in several variations.  The most common is the battery powered.  Each shade is powered by either alkaline or lithium depending on the manufacturers recommendation.  There are also rechargeable and solar powered options.  Since many battery wands take up to 8 batteries to run the shade, we find that the rechargeable wand is a better option.  Although the solar power option has improved over the past several years, it is not a good fit for north facing windows. Automation is becoming easier since first writing this post.  Many of the motors in window coverings now have blue tooth capability.

To eliminate the need to charge or change batteries your option would be to hardwire your shades to a junction box.  This option is great if you are in the process of building a new home.  However it may be price prohibitive for someone updating their existing home.

Automated Blinds and Shades

Add a smart hub to control your shades with your smart devices.

If you choose to automate your motorized blinds and shades by adding a smart hub, your shades are ready to be set up to communicate with your smart phone and smart devices.  Down load the app on your smart phone to be able to create scenes (desired position for your shades in a particular space).  Also you can program your shades to function throughout the day to provide the most energy efficient position for a certain time of day. During the winter months program your south and east facing shades to raise in the morning to help bring the sun’s heat into your home.  Of course the opposite would be true during the summer months. While traveling you will be able to raise and lower your shades from anywhere.  Keeping your home safe by creating the allusion of someone being present in the home at random times throughout the day.
